  • What I Bring on My Travels

As someone who travels quite a bit, I think I am getting pretty good at it. In fact, I have come up with a list of things I have to take along on every trip. Now occasionally I forget one of these, but usually you will find every single one of these things in my bag or a jacket pocket at any time while I am away from home: Rick Steves Travel Dreams Sleep Mask - I used to think these things were useless...

  • Going to Dubai? Avoid the Airport at Night!

If you can, try to get a flight to Dubai that arrives midday. If you come late at night or early in the morning, then get ready to wait for a very long time to get through customs. Usually I have taken one of KLM's direct flights from Amsterdam, but this time I did Lufthansa via Munich (less than half the cost). It arrived at 630 this morning and the airport was a zoo. When I arrived at the customs...

  • New 7 Wonders???

So today I saw a blog posting regarding some new attempt to come up with a "official" 7 Wonders of the World list. Apparently voting has been going on for a few years and was according to some a "worldwide" effort. What? You never heard of this effort? Neither had I. I guess they should rename it to the 7Wonders according to a few online users in a few select countries. That's not to say I don't agree...

  • Great Review of Noise Cancellation Headphones in NYTimes

Being a frequent flyer, I am also a frequent purchaser on technology to make the trip a little more pleasant. One of the key tools I use are a pair of headphones to block out the noise. One of the problems is that there are few good comparisons of all the choices out there. So when a review shows up from David Pogue of the New York Times , I had to read it. The obvious winner in this review was the...

  • Why I hate flying alliance partners

The promise is great. Earn your miles on one airline and reap the rewards regardless of the carrier. So when I fly 50,000 or 100,000 miles on United, I should get the benefits on Lufthansa, and the other Star Alliance partners as well. But it doesn't always work out that way. I flew today from Sydney to Los Angeles on United and got bumped up to Business. But the rest of the flight back to Amsterdam...
  • Are they serious??? No booing in school games???

When traveling, I love to get a bit of news from home...whether that means general US news, or more specific to Seattle and other cities I have lived in. The New York Times Reader made this possible starting a few months ago. I can download the latest news when online, and then view it in a format similar to the original paper when I am on a plane or in a hotel. I was very excited to see the the Seattle...

  • Getting the best seat possible

As someone who spends way too much time thinking about how I can get the most bang for my time spent on airplanes, I was excited to find a few new tools to help me out. When I fly, I want to find a flight with the best, most comfortable seat at the lowest rate. After learning that partner airlines don’t all give full credit I also want to get everything I can from the deal (I once flew a KLM flight...

  • Getting the Time Right

Yeah, sure I am a frequent world traveler, but I am a complete moron when it comes to figuring out what time it is where ever I am about to go. Tomorrow I go to London and thats easy because its one hour behind Amsterdam. But in a few weeks I go to Singapore, then Melbourne, then Sydney, then Dubai in a single trip. While I can look up the timezones in the Windows Time dialog, its too easy to change...

  • Posting what you can do and what will kill you

Kathy Sierra has a recent post about how nice it is to see a sign that tells you to do what most signs tell you not to do. There is a sign at the entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney that asks you to please DO walk on the grass. Thats a great sign. But in that same city I saw two signs that were very different on my last trip there. Both had a common theme: don't do something, but if...

  • Is more access a good thing?

So I am sitting on my plane, waiting for passengers to board while I type on my blackberry. When I am on my laptop, I will probably continue to use LiveWriter and not email to post to a blog. The only other device I use is the bb and I don't know how many deep thoughts I am likely to have that anyone would care about when I am stuck using a chiclet keyboard. It could allow me to use a public kiosk...

  • Visited Countries Getting Redder

Every now and then I like to check out the Visited Countries page to see how much of the world I have covered. Here are my current results. Wow! Now I still have to hit Africa and most of southern South America....and China....oh, India, and most of SE Asia....oh and all those places in the MidEast where my head might not stay attached to the rest of my body....OK, there is a lot to see still.... • United is doubling EQM miles till EOY

In case you fly much, this could be a fantastic deal. You pay them about 400 Euros and they will double any miles you fly till December 15 and count that amount towards your EQM miles . Thats the amazing part... those are the miles required to get Premier, Premier Exec, and 1K. Usually when you get any kind of bonus miles, they are just good for use for upgrades and free tickets. Those are good, but...

  • Where have I been???

Its been about 6 weeks since I last posted anything here. Well, for the last week I have been in my bed....sleeping....trying to get rid of this damned cough. I have heard from a few others who had roughly the same symptoms: unproductive cough, total exhaustion, ravenous hunger. Its a bizarre sickness. Every time I lie down, I start coughing. As soon as I get up, I stop. Breathing deeply seems to stop...
